World Cup Bound: Viviane Asseyi

West Ham United Women will have six players at this summer’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup! The tournament, which is being held across Australia and New Zealand is now just five days away from beginning.

Ahead of the action getting underway, we will spotlight every Hammer who will be in action throughout the competition. Next up is Viviane Asseyi...

Asseyi has played 62 times for Les Bleues and will be looking to feature in her second World Cup for her country, having played three times at the 2019 World Cup, which took place at home in France.

The 29-year-old forward has been a regular throughout World Cup qualifying, helping France top their qualifying group and scoring goals against Greece and Kazakhstan.

Asseyi featured for a brief five minute cameo in their friendly win over the Republic of Ireland last week, but was an unused substitute as they lost to Australia in their final warm-up contest on Friday 14 July.

Around Chadwell Heath, Asseyi is known for being a happy and funny person and can almost always been seen playing up to the West Ham TV cameras!

On the pitch, Asseyi has been an important player for the Hammers during the 2022/23 Barclays Women's Super League season, her debut campaign in England having joined from FC Bayern Munich in August.

The forward played in all 22 WSL matches this season, totalling 1941 minutes to put her in the top ten of minutes played by any player across the league season. Asseyi scored six goals in her debut campaign in Claret & Blue, whilst also laying on three assists for her teammates.

In total, Asseyi featured in all 29 matches that West Ham United played last season.

Asseyi scored her first Hammers goals against Reading back in October, and you can relive that match by watching the highlights below!

France are in Group F for the upcoming World Cup, and will face Jamaica in their opening fixture on Sunday 23 July at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

A tough match at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane against Brazil will follow on Saturday 29 July, with the winner of that fixture likely to top the group. Finally, they will return to Sydney to end their group stage action against Panama on Sunday 2 August.

Matches will be available to watch in the UK across the BBC and ITV.
