The Opposition
After taking Chelsea to the final weekend of the Barclays Women’s Super League season last year, Manchester United would have been looking to go one step further and win it this time. However, they made a stuttering start to the 2023/24 campaign and haven’t replicated the same consistency so far this season.
A last-gasp winner earned them a narrow opening day win against Aston Villa and then they missed out on a first Women’s Champions League group stage spot after defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
After successive draws against Arsenal and Leicester City, they started to up their form, recording a 5-0 win over Everton in the WSL, before defeating the Toffees 7-0 in the Continental Tyres League Cup.
The Red Devils have suffered three losses since the turn of the year, including a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last time out. They come into today’s fixture against the Hammers occupying fourth spot in the standings.
Manager, Marc Skinner led Birmingham City to the FA Cup Final in 2017 and then to fifth place in the WSL in 2017/18, before embarking on a new challenge in the United States with Orlando Pride in the NWSL.
He returned to England in 2021/22, taking over at United from Casey Stoney, and after a fourth-place finish in his first season, their attempt to secure a first-ever WSL title fell narrowly short as Chelsea continued their recent dominance, taking the title by two points.
United also reached the FA Cup Final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in May.
To date, Skinner has taken charge of 83 matches as boss of the Red Devils, winning 52 matches, drawing 16 and losing 15, giving him a win percentage of 62 percent.
