The Opposition

Last season, Liverpool shined with a mostly veteran squad. They finished seventh in the WSL after earning promotion to the topflight just months before.

This time around, Matt Beard’s team has had a flying start. With wins over Arsenal and Aston Villa, and a tight 1-0 loss to Everton in the Merseyside derby, the Reds are not to be underestimated. With a revamped squad and a manager determined find ways to improve, Liverpool are confident as they look to climb their way up the table.

As a manager, Beard is no stranger to success.

During his first stint with Liverpool Women (between 2012-2015), the now 45-year-old led the Reds to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 – and was named the WSL Manager of the Year for those triumphs

Since returning to Prenton Park in 2021 after leading Boston Breakers, the Hammers and Bristol City (interim), the manager has been back to winning ways. In two years he’s earned promotion back to the WSL and secured a contract extension with the club.

Previous Meetings

The Hammers have beaten the Reds twice, lost four times, and have drawn twice.

Last time out, in April at Chigwell Construction Stadium, the teams produced a competitive 0-0 draw. In the opening period it was a back-and-forth battle, with both sides fighting for possession. Despite a couple chances for West Ham’s Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Liverpool’s Yana Daniëls, no one could find the net.

In the second half, the visitors took more control of the match and tested the Irons’ defense. However, a locked-in Mackenzie Arnold and a versatile, determined backline secured a clean sheet.
