The Opposition...
Despite a season of some unfortunate results and abrupt managerial changes, the Foxes will look back on the campaign as a season of great progress. The club are currently sat in tenth place in the Barclay’s Women’s Super League table, have bettered their points tally from last season and have secured a fourth consecutive term of WSL football after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
Back-to-back wins in their opening two Women’s Super League games against Bristol City and Everton handed them a perfect start to the season, while draws with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur saw them continue that impressive spell.
After registering an impressive penalty shootout win over WSL leaders Manchester City in the Continental Tyres League Cup in November, the Foxes have gone on to complete Women’s Super League doubles over Bristol City and Everton.
Leicester were knocked out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup by Tottenham Hotspur last month at the semi-final stage, conceding deep into extra-time. Defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium continued a poor recent run of form, with the Foxes’ last WSL victory coming back in February.
Following the sacking of Willie Kirk after almost two years in charge, Leicester City assistant Jennifer Foster and first-team coach Stephen Kirby have taken the step up as interim bosses to hold the reins for the remainder of the season.
They stepped in and guided the club to victory against Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in March, though as mentioned, Leicester are currently on six-match winless run in all competitions.
Foster, who has been the Women’s First Team Assistant since the start of the season, is highly-rated within the club, having previously been a First Team Coach at Birmingham City before spending two seasons in a similar role at Bristol City.
Coach's View...
"I think Leicester’s principles under the new management team are still the same. They’re still working really hard out of possession, and out of all of the teams, they probably press the highest out of everybody," Hammers boss Rehanne Skinner told reporters at her pre-match press conference ahead of the game.
"A couple of players, particularly [Jutta] Rantala and [Yuka] Momiki have been fantastic for them and they’ve had a massive impact on their squad. We know that we had a really tough game against them earlier on in the season, but it was a game where I felt we should have been a couple ahead at half time, and instead we had to rely on a late goal at the end.
"We want to rectify that and start more on the front foot and be a little more clinical this time around."
