The Opposition
After finishing fifth in the Barclays Women’s Championship last season, Charlton Athletic are ready to break new ground. This past transfer window, the Addicks brought in a slew of new talent, making additions in all areas of the pitch. So far this campaign, they’ve recorded one win, three draws and a loss, which is a solid foundation to build from in the months to come.
Charlton was founded in 1991, and for two decades, they were one of the most successful women’s teams in England. However, after their parent club was relegated from the Premier League in 2007, the squad was forced to disband. Shortly after following a sponsorship deal, the team was allowed to continue. As resilience, strength and a competitive edge is within the club’s DNA, expect Charlton’s players to leave it all on the pitch.
After an 11-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur, Karen Hills was appointed as Charlton Head Coach in March 2021.
With Spurs, Hills played a vital role in their growth and development between 2009 and 2020. At that time, she helped the team move from the amateur level all the way to the Barclay’s Women’s Super League.
During her first season, Hills led the Addicks to a solid fifth-place finish. As a player, she was part of the Charlton squad that won the FA Cup in 2005.
Previous Meetings
Two of their three most recent meetings came in the 2018 and 2020 Continental Cup, where West Ham won 2-0 and 4-0 respectively.
Last time out, in August 2021, the Irons earned a 2-1 win in a pre-season friendly with Karen Hills’ side. Despite going into the break with a 1-0 deficit courtesy of Heidi Logan, Yui Hasegawa (now at Manchester City) equalized minutes into the second half. The Japanese international doubled her tally and sealed a West Ham win after netting a superb free-kick eight minutes from time.
