Matchday Information

Before kick-off on Sunday, we will remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, as well as all those that have lost their lives in conflict by pausing for a moment of silence.

After the match, players will be able to thank and meet supporters in attendance for up to 20 minutes after the full-time whistle is sounded. Players will then head inside to complete their recovery work.

The Opposition

Bristol City have had a shaky start to their Barclay’s Women’s Super League campaign. Returning to the top-flight after a two-year absence, they’ve lost all four league games played so far and currently sit at the bottom of the table.

However, the Robins should not be underestimated. Excluding a 5-0 loss to Manchester City, Lauren Smith’s squad have found the net against Leicester City, Tottenham and Arsenal. Whilst they’re still finding their footing in the WSL, they know what it takes to score goals against some of the league’s best teams.

Last season, Bristol City were a powerhouse in the Championship with 15 wins, three draws and four losses across the 22-match campaign. City have strong attacking prowess, led by the club’s 2022/23 Golden Boot winner Shania Hayles, who netted 13 goals in all competitions. From a defensive point of view, last season City only conceded 12 goals, the joint fewest across both the WSL and the Championship.

Since taking the reins from former West Ham United coach Matt Beard in 2021, who was interim for the Robins at the time, Lauren Smith has taken Bristol City to new heights.

The Welshwoman’s coaching journey began in 2010 with the club’s academy. Since then, she’s assisted both the Wales national team and Tottenham Hotspur Women. Now, she’s risen through the ranks to become head coach of Bristol City.

Smith’s shining moment came in April 2023 when she lifted City back to the Women’s Super League. In front of 7,000 fans at Ashton Gate, the Robins hoisted the Barclays Women’s Championship trophy. For her efforts, Smith earned the LMA Championship Manager of the Season for 2022/23.

In the summer, Smith signed a new three-year deal as head coach of Bristol City Women.

Previous Meetings

The Hammers have beaten the Robins three times, and have drawn once, facing them four times in competitive action.

In their first fixture in November 2018, West Ham won 2-0 with goals from Alisha Lehmann and Jane Ross. Next up, in April 2019, West Ham earned a comeback 2-1 win thanks to Ross’ 89th-minute finish. The Hammers earned their largest win over Bristol in December 2020 with a 4-0 result at Twerton Park. However, in February 2021, the teams shared points.

Last time out, in September, West Ham defeated the Robins 3-0 in a friendly match. A hat-trick from Viviane Asseyi secured the victory in east London during Rehanne Skinner’s first home fixture in charge of the squad.
