Women's Loan Watch: Flannery, Houssein and Stapleton help Reading to victory

Our weekly look at how West Ham United women’s team’s loanees are performing for their respective clubs...

Jessie Stapleton, Halle Houssein and Keira Flannery all helped Reading to a late victory against Sunderland on Sunday.

All three players started the match at Madejski Stadium, with Flannery making her debut for the Royals having joined them on 31 January.

The game in Berkshire took a while to get going, but that all changed when Louise Griffiths was shown a straight red card for pulling the hair of Bethan Roberts.

This allowed Liam Gilbert’s team to take the initiative, and they eventual found the breakthrough 13 minutes from time. A low ball into the box wasn’t cleared away by the visitors, allowing Maddison Perry to strike in the winning goal.

Stapleton played the full 90 minutes, Flannery was replaced on 68 minutes, whilst Houssein came off just before the full-time whistle.

Mel Filis

Elsewhere, Mel Filis could only help Charlton to a 1-1 draw against Lewes on Sunday.

The Addicks were able to maintain top spot in the Barclays Women’s Championship, but had to come behind against Scott Booth’s team, who are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Aimee Claypole opened the scoring on 43 minutes at The Oakwood, but substitute Tegan McGowan was able to head home an equaliser on 79 minutes. Karen Hills’ side went in search of a winner but were unable to find it before time ran out.

Soraya Walsh was in action for Billericay as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City in the FA Women’s National League Premier South division.

The young winger has been picking up consistent minutes for the Essex-based outfit, but couldn’t help them pick up any points, as they found themselves two goals down before half time.

16-year-old Maya Lane grabbed a consolation late on, but Billericay couldn’t find a way back into the game.
