Wolverhampton Wanderers v West Ham United | All You Need To Know

Wolverhampton Wanderers v West Ham United
Stateside Cup, EverBank Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida, USA, Saturday 27 July 2024, 7pm EDT

West Ham United will take to the pitch in the American state of Florida for the first time on Saturday evening, when we take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first of two Stateside Cup ties.

Head Coach Julen Lopetegui will lead his squad against the club he managed in the 2022/23 season, with the game to be played at the EverBank Stadium in the city of Jacksonville.

West Ham have played two pre-season matches to date, drawing 2-2 with Hungarian champions Ferencváros in Austria, then defeating National League side Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

This Saturday’s game will see a step up in quality of opposition, though, with Wolves having finished 14th in the Premier League last season under the management of former West Ham midfielder Gary O’Neil.

It is the first of three Stateside Cup matches, with Wolves taking on Crystal Palace in midweek in Annapolis, Maryland, before the Hammers tackle the Eagles at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday 3 August.

Team News…

Michail Antonio, Vladimír Coufal and Tomáš Souček have joined up with the West Ham United squad in Florida after returning from their summer breaks.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Maximilian Kilman could face the club he departed after six seasons at the start of July.

Head Coach Julen Lopetegui has brought a large squad to Florida, and Academy of Football prospects George Earthy, Lewis Orford, Kaelan Casey, Patrick Kelly and Gideon Kodua are among those hopeful of being given gametime in Jacksonville.

Wolves have brought in four players this summer – midfielder Tommy Doyle from Manchester City, right-back Rodridgo Gomes from Portuguese club Braga, Brazilian right-back Pedro Lima from Sport Recife and Norway centre forward Jørgen Strand Larsen on loan from Spanish club Celta Vigo.

Former West Ham defender Craig Dawson could feature for the Old Gold.

Opposition…

Wolverhampton Wanderers are playing in the United States for the first time since 1981. Incidentally, Wolves also visited Jacksonville 43 years ago, when they fell to a 4-1 post-season friendly defeat by the city’s NASL team, the Tea Men, who were themselves coached by former West Ham United defender and captain Noel Cantwell.

Wolves finished 14th in the Premier League last season under the management of former West Ham midfielder and AFC Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil.

The Molineux side have yet to contest an official pre-season match, but have been building their fitness levels in training matches against Italian side Como and EFL Championship club Bristol City, while our opponents also travelled to Marbella in Spain for a warm-weather training camp.

Previous Meetings…

West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been regular adversaries in recent seasons, facing each other 12 times over the previous six Premier League seasons.

The Hammers have won six of the last eight Premier League meetings, including both last season, 3-0 at London Stadium and 2-1 at Molineux.

Those victories edged the Irons in front in the overall Premier League head-to-head, with eight wins to seven and one draw.

The overall record in all competitions is firmly in the Hammers’ favour with 35 wins to Wolves’ 24, and 14 draws.

The Irons’ most emphatic Premier League result against Wolves was the 4-0 victory we scored over them at London Stadium in September 2020.

Prior to that, the Hammers registered two 5-0 top-flight wins over Wolves in the old First Division, with Bobby Moore scoring in both victories at the Boleyn Ground in December 1960 and September 1964.
