West Ham United's 2023/24 season - By the numbers

West Ham United have completed yet another busy campaign.

The Hammers broke the 50-match mark for the third consecutive season, playing 53 times to take the total number of competitive games played since the start of 2021/22 to 163.

As we prepare for a well-earned close-season break, albeit one filled with exciting international tournaments all over the globe, let’s first run the numbers on 2023/24…

 

287 – The 2023/24 season kicked-off at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium on 7 August 2022, and ended at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, some 287 days later.

53 – West Ham United contested 53 matches, with 38 in the Premier League, ten in the UEFA Europa League, three in the EFL Cup and two in the FA Cup.

82 – The Hammers scored 82 goals, with 81 of them being shared between 15 different players, and the other being an own-goal netted by Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

30 – Jarrod Bowen had 30 direct goal involvements in 2023/24, scoring 20 goals and assisting ten more in his 44 appearances in all competitions. In doing so, he became the first Hammer since John Hartson in 1997/98 to register 30 or more direct goal involvements.

16 – Jarrod Bowen also matched Paolo Di Canio’s Club record for Premier League goals in a single season, which the Italian set in 1999/00. The England winger managed his in 34 appearances, while Di Canio scored 16 in just 30 games.

138 – Alphonse Areola was kept VERY busy keeping goal for West Ham United, making 138 saves in just 31 Premier League appearances – an average of nearly 4.5 saves per game. Only two goalkeepers kept more Premier League saves than the Frenchman, and both of them started all 38 matches – Manchester United’s André Onana made 149, while Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski made 145.

4,063 – No Hammer played more minutes in 2023/24 than Vladimír Coufal, who edged James Ward-Prowse into second place by appearing for 4,063 minutes to the England midfielder’s 4,021. Coufal’s Czech compatriot Tomáš Souček ranked third with 3,996, but it was the midfielder who managed the most appearances overall with 52, one ahead of Ward-Prowse and five more than Coufal.

14 – Mohammed Kudus’s 14 goals were the most scored by a West Ham United player in their first season with the Club since Mike Small netted 18 in 1991/92. The Ghana international netted eight in the Premier League, five in the UEFA Europa League and one in the EFL Cup.

997 – George Earthy became the 997th player to represent West Ham United – since the Club was reformed in 1900 – when he made his first-team debut in a 5-0 home win over SC Freiburg in a UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg tie at London Stadium on 14 March 2024.

7 – Sticking with debutants, seven players made their West Ham United bows during the 2023/24 season – Edson Álvarez, James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, Dinos Mavropanos, Callum Marshall, Kalvin Phillips and George Earthy.

27 – In total, 27 players appeared for West Ham United in 2023/24, with 24 of them making starts and three, Callum Marshall, Kaelan Casey and George Earthy, appearing only as substitutes.

26 – West Ham United played competitive matches at 26 different grounds in 2023/24, while also playing 26 times on home turf at London Stadium. The Hammers visited Liverpool’s Anfield and SC Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion twice each, and 23 different grounds on one occasion. The Irons took part in the first Premier League fixture held at Luton Town’s Kenilworth Road, defeating the Hatters 2-1 on 1 September and becoming the first team to win a Premier League game there in the process. West Ham also visited Olympiacos’s Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece, TSC Arena in Serbia and Bayer Leverkusen’s BayArena in Germany for the first time. In fact, the Hammers visited the latter twice, having also played there in pre-season.
