West Ham United women’s team v Tottenham Hotspur
Barclays Women's Super League, Chigwell Construction Stadium, Sunday 23 March 2025, 12pm GMT

West Ham United women’s team will look to continue their run of positive performances with a performance that wins three points against Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.

Although it was two-and-a-half weeks ago, Rehanne Skinner’s side will head into the London derby buoyed by their last-gasp draw with Manchester City last time out. Manuela Paví was the hero under the lights at Chigwell Construction Stadium, as she curled home a 91st-minute leveller to earn the Hammers a deserved point.

The Irons’ home form this term has been record-breaking, as the equaliser against the Citizens meant the women’s team have now chalked up 14 points in east London - eclipsing the 2021/22 campaign’s historic high of 13.

Only two teams have left Dagenham with three points this term and the Hammers will be determined to keep that intact when Tottenham Hotspur arrive on Sunday.

Spurs find themselves trying to get out of a rut, having lost five matches on the bounce in all competitions, and the Irons not only have the incentive of claiming the bragging rights against their London rivals, but know that a win would see them leapfrog the Lilywhites in the WSL standings.

The derby will take centre stage in the WSL’s Marquee Weekend, being televised on Sky Sports, and will kick-off at 12noon - so set your alarms!

Here’s what you need to know about the clash against Tottenham…

Opposition...

Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Chigwell Construction Stadium looking to end a run of five straight defeats in all competitions.

Robert Vilahamn’s side, who have won one of their last seven matches, are seventh in the WSL standings with five wins from their 16 matches, which follows a 2023/24 campaign in which they finished sixth.

The north London outfit - who were first promoted to the WSL in the 2019 - flew out of the traps this term, putting four unanswered goals past visiting Crystal Palace on the opening day, and claiming a point against Aston Villa before defeating Charlton Athletic in Subway® Women’s League Cup.

Then, following a downturn in form, which saw them taste victory just once from their next six matches, the Lilywhites found their groove as they crafted a five-match unbeaten run, which was ended by Skinner’s side in the quarter-finals of the League Cup in January.

Spurs’ highest-ever finish in England’s top flight came in the 2021/22 season, when they ended the campaign fifth under Skinner's management, and there is a chance they could match that record if they are to put a run together between now and the end of the term.

Their captain and striker Bethany England is set to be sidelined through injury for the fixture, so the goalscoring responsibility will likely fall on the shoulders of former Hammer Martha Thomas.

Wiltshire-born Thomas joined Spurs at the start of the 2023/24 season and is nearing 50 appearances for the Lilywhites. Her move to north London followed two seasons at Manchester United, where she helped the club qualify for their first-ever Women’s FA Cup final and secure UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification for the first time.

The 28-year-old is making another return to Chigwell Construction Stadium after her two-season spell in Claret and Blue.

Meanwhile, Vilahamn was appointed Tottenham Hotspur head coach in July 2023 following a fruitful spell at BK Häcken.

During his two seasons with the Swedish club’s women’s team, he secured them qualification to the UEFA Women’s Champions League and reached the Swedish Cup final in both 2022 and 2023.

This came after his time as assistant coach with the men’s side, whom he helped qualify for the maiden UEFA Conference League in 2021.

In his first season in charge of Spurs, the 42-year-old led his side to their first-ever Adobe Women’s FA Cup final, where they were eventually beaten 4-0 by Manchester United after finishing sixth in the WSL that term.

Previous Meetings…

The last time the two sides met, in January, goals from Kirsty Smith and Seraina Piubel helped the Hammers knock Spurs out of the Subway® Women’s League Cup at the quarter-final stage. But in the reverse fixture, a late goal handed the Lilywhites a 2-1 victory back in November.

The Hammers' last league victory against Tottenham came in December 2022, when goals from Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Hawa Cissoko secured West Ham a 2-0 win.

Overall, Spurs have had the better of the head-to-head fixtures, winning six of the 13 matches.
