The Opposition
Everton are looking to build on last season’s sixth placed finish but know that will be a tough challenge as the competition in the Barclays Women’s Super League continues to increase.
Indeed, Everton were quietly impressive under Brian Sørensen’s leadership last term, beating those in and around them to finish narrowly in the top half of the table.
So far this term, they’ve struggled for consistency, picking up two victories from their ten matches in all competitions. However, Sørensen will take have taken heart from their valiant 2-1 victory over Aston Villa before the international break and will hope to see similar endeavour against the Hammers.
Everton sit eighth in the WSL table heading into the match, four points ahead of West Ham.
Manager Sørensen began his career in his native Denmark at IK Skovbakken in 2009. After three seasons in Aarhus, he made the move to Fortuna Hjørring in July 2012. Here, Sørensen played a crucial part in his team’s success as he led them to two league titles, as well as reaching the quarter finals in the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League.
The 43-year-old was made head coach at FC Nordsjælland in July 2019, where he earned his team the Danish Cup. A move back to Fortuna Hjørring followed at the beginning of the 2020/21 season, and with Sørensen back at the helm, the team were led to a second-place finish in the Elitedivisionen, as well as qualification for the 2022/23 UEFA Women's Champions League.
On 8 April 2022, Sørensen crossed the North Sea as he was appointed the head coach of Everton on a two-year contract. In his first season in charge, he guided the squad to a sixth-place finish with a total of 30 points on the board. Sørensen has led the Toffees to 11 wins in 30 WSL games.
The teams have met eight times previously in all competitions. Of those eight games, the Hammers have won three, the Toffees have won three, and there’s been two draws.
West Ham’s last victory against Everton came in September 2022, when a goal from Lisa Evans clinched the three points at Chigwell Construction Stadium.
