Team News…

West Ham United Manager Paul Konchesky will be without Jess Ziu and Amber Tysiak for the visit of Liverpool. Ziu has been out with an ACL injury since the penalty shootout win over London City Lionesses in early October but is making good progress with her rehabilitation. Tysiak is close to returning to action, but isn't expected to be back for the game against the Reds.

Abbey-Leigh Stringer hasn’t featured in the WSL since the 0-0 draw with Arsenal in early February and is also a doubt for Sunday’s fixture.

The Opposition...

Following promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League from the Barclays Championship last season, Liverpool will be pretty happy with their start to life in the top flight this term. With 15 games played, Matt Beard’s outfit have picked up 15 points, with four wins, three draws and eight defeats so far this season as they head to east London today.

One of those victories came against the Hammers in December last year, the last time West Ham played Liverpool in the league. First-half goals from Welsh midfielder Ceri Holland and American forward Katie Stengel secured a 2-0 win for the Reds on Merseyside. It was a victory that ended a seven-game winless run for Liverpool, who had lost five of their following seven fixtures after a shock 2-1 win over Chelsea in September.

That memorable triumph over the Blues - thanks to a brace from Stengel - has been the highlight of the season for the Reds so far, although the club has shaken off that rocky period through the Autumn and now looks comfortably well on their way to consecutive seasons in the top flight. Of course, Beard will hope to take a further step towards securing that place among the elite of English football next year with a win over his former employers today.

Appointed as Liverpool manager for the second time in May 2021, Matt Beard returned to Merseyside nearly six years after his first tenure, which saw Liverpool secure successive Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014.

Between stints with the Reds, Beard has also managed Bristol City Women, West Ham United Women and also Boston Breakers in the United States. Beard took charge of the Hammers’ first season as a professional outfit and led the Irons to a FA Cup final in 2018, which they lost to Manchester City.

In his first season back with Liverpool, Beard took his side to promotion from the Championship, following a 20-game unbeaten run and a title win, with the club eleven points clear by the season’s conclusion.

As it stands, he has taken four wins from his first 15 games back in the top flight and also reached the Conti Cup quarter-finals this term.
