West Ham United v Crystal Palace | All You Need To Know

West Ham United v Crystal Palace
Stateside Cup, Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida, USA, Saturday 3 August 2024, 7pm EDT

West Ham United’s 2024/25 pre-season schedule moves a step closer to its conclusion this weekend as the Irons take on Crystal Palace in our second Stateside Cup tie.

A fourth match of a varied summer programme puts the Hammers against Oliver Glasner’s Eagles, who have enjoyed a successful pre-season so far, and are unbeaten in their matches prior to their meeting with West Ham in Tampa, Florida.

The Hammers have played three pre-season matches so far, drawing 2-2 with Hungarian champions Ferencváros in Austria, then defeating National League side Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 at Chigwell Construction Stadium. A match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their first of two Sunshine State Tour matches last time out in Jacksonville ended in a 3-1 defeat, where a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning delayed kick-off for just over two hours at EverBank Stadium.

Palace, meanwhile, are also preparing for their fifth pre-season fixture, having won their opening Stateside Cup fixture against Wolves in Annapolis, Maryland in midweek. Palace's 3-1 victory over Wolves means West Ham need a three-goal win at Raymond James Stadium to lift the inaugural Stateside Cup.

Team News…

Lucas Paquetá joined up with his Hammers colleagues for training earlier this week, after his international schedule with Brazil took the midfielder into July, and he could earn his first minutes ahead of the new campaign. Jarrod Bowen and Alphonse Areola arrived in Florida on Thursday, so it is likely Saturday's game will come too early for them.

Head Coach Julen Lopetegui has brought a large squad to Florida, and Academy of Football prospects Freddie Potts, George Earthy, Lewis Orford, Kaelan Casey and Gideon Kodua will be hopeful of being given further game time in Tampa.

Crystal Palace have brought in three players this summer – midfielder Daichi Kamada from Lazio, right-winger Ismaïla Sarr from French club Olympique de Marseille and Moroccan international defender Chadi Riad from FC Barcelona.

Opposition…

Following a successful tour of Chicago and Detroit in 2023, Crystal Palace are playing in the United States for the second consecutive summer, having faced Millionarios and Sevilla last summer.

The unveiling of Schärding-born Glasner as head coach in February 2024 meant Crystal Palace joined an ever-growing list of top-flight teams to look to the continent for their next appointment.

When Glasner took over in south London, Palace were embroiled in a relegation battle after just three wins in 19 matches across all competitions. Now, six months on, it has proved a shrewd appointment by Palace, who went unbeaten in their last eleven matches in all competitions, after finishing tenth in the Premier League, one place behind West Ham.

The Selhurst Park side started their pre-season schedule with a training ground victory over Sutton United, before drawing with Charlton Athletic and beating Crawley Town in a nine-goal thriller.

They kicked off their Stateside Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wolves in Maryland earlier this week.

Previous Meetings…

All of West Ham and Crystal Palace’s last 22 meetings have come in the Premier League, ever since the Irons’ return to the top-flight via the Play-Offs in the 2011/12 season.

Palace have won three of the last five Premier League meetings, including an instantly forgettable 5-2 defeat for the Hammers at Selhurst Park in April.

That victory edged the Eagles in front in the overall Premier League head-to-head, with eight wins to seven and seven draws.

The overall record in all competitions is narrowly in the Hammers’ favour with 25 wins to Palace's’ 24, and 19 draws.

The Hammers’ most emphatic Premier League victory against Palace was the 3-0 win we scored over them at London Stadium in January 2017, courtesy of second half goals from Sofiane Féghouli, Andy Carroll and Manuel Lanzini.

Prior to that, the Hammers registered a 5-1 over the Eagles in the old Second Division, with Victor Watson scoring four goals 1923 at Selhurst Park.
