West Ham United v Burnley | All You Need To Know

West Ham United v Burnley
Premier League, London Stadium, Sunday 10 March 2024, 2pm GMT

West Ham United face a quick turnaround as they return to Premier League action when Burnley make the trip to east London on Sunday.

Having fallen to defeat at SC Freiburg on Thursday evening in southwest Germany, David Moyes’ Hammers welcome Vincent Kompany’s side to London Stadium on 10 March, with kick-off set for 2pm.

After back-to-back wins in the Premier League, against Brentford and Everton, West Ham will return to domestic action with plenty of confidence, looking to continue building momentum in their quest for European qualification next season.

The sides last met in November in the reverse fixture at Turf Moor, where Divin Mubama forced an own goal from Burnley defender Dara O’Shea with four minutes left, then Tomáš Souček completed a dramatic late turnaround in injury time.

The Irons sit in seventh ahead of Sunday’s clash, while Burnley are second bottom, eleven points from Premier League safety with just 12 matches remaining.

Team News…

Ahead of Thursday night’s fixture against SC Freiburg in the Europa League, boss David Moyes explained that there was a question mark regarding defender Nayef Aguerd, while Maxwel Cornet is still recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained in training late last month.

Left-back Emerson came off injured in the second-half during last night's encounter in Germany, making him doubtful for Sunday.

Burnley are expected to be without Jordan Beyer, Lyle Foster, Aaron Ramsay, and Nathan Redmond, who all are nursing knocks.

However, midfielder Josh Brownhill is expected to return to Kompany’s starting XI after serving his one-match ban for a red card he picked up against Crystal Palace.

Opposition...

The Premier League promised land has slowly become a nightmare for Burnley, as they find themselves adrift in the bottom three heading into this fixture.

After relegation to the Championship in 2021/22, Vincent Kompany’s appointment to at Turf Moor saw him revolutionise the Clarets’ playing style in a matter of months, transferring a team known for its rigid defence and direct style into a free-flowing attacking team that cruised to the EFL Championship title.

With 101 points secured, and just three defeats in 46 Championship matches, Burnley earned promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the 2023/24 season back in the top-flight

However, three-quarters of the way through the season and they will need to pull off an apparent miracle to avoid an immediate drop to the second division.

They have claimed just 12 points in 27 league matches, leaving Kompany’s side second bottom of the Premier League table. The question asked by many is where did it go all wrong? The Clarets signed 15 new players last summer, most of them young players, which has evidently proven challenging. On the other hand, there has been too many goals conceded, with only bottom club Sheffield United (72) letting more in than Burnley’s 60. With just 25 goals scored, the second lowest in the division so far, there is clear cause for concern.

So far this season they have registered three wins, with the last one coming back in December, a 2-0 at Craven Cottage against Fulham. They’ve collected only one point against top-half opposition, so West Ham, who have returned to their best form in recent weeks, will be hopeful of claiming maximum points and extending their winning league run.

Draws at home to Luton Town and Fulham in January, while a home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend could prove critical to the Clarets' survival prospects, though with three of their next four fixtures after their visit to West Ham coming against sides in the bottom half of the table, it is imperative they find some winning form during that run of games.

Previous meetings...

West Ham meet Burnley for the 18th time in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Hammers are unbeaten in the last five meetings between the two clubs, winning three and drawing the other two.

In total, West Ham have won eight of those top-flight fixtures since that first meeting in 2009, where we triumphed in an eight-goal thriller 5-3 at the Boleyn Ground. As mentioned earlier, the most recent meeting, at Turf Moor, ended in a dramatic 2-1 win for the Irons.

Burnley did complete the Premier League double over West Ham in 2019/20, winning 3-0 at Turf Moor in November 2019 and 1-0 at London Stadium in July, but the Hammers got their revenge by completing their own double the following season, winning 1-0 in east London in January before securing a 2-1 success at Turf Moor in May.

West Ham’s biggest Premier League win over Burnley was in fact that win on 28 November 2009, when Gianfranco Zola’s side secured a 5-3 win at the Boleyn Ground.
