West Ham United sign Finland international Eva Nyström

West Ham United women’s team are delighted to announce the signing of Finland international defender Eva Nyström, subject to international clearance.

The 25-year-old centre-back has signed a two-and-a-half year contract in east London after leaving Swedish Damallsvenskan side Hammarby IF.

Nyström joins the Hammers having made over 100 appearances for the Stockholm-based club since arriving in 2021, including matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League where she faced the likes of holders Barcelona in the group stage of the competition earlier this season.

The defender has also won domestic silverware in Sweden, winning both the Swedish Cup and Swedish top division title in 2023.

Now, the Helsinki native, who will wear the No13 shirt, is looking forward to starting the next chapter of her career with West Ham United in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

“I’m really happy to be joining West Ham United,” Nyström told West Ham TV.

“I’ve had a successful few seasons behind me - playing in the Champions League and winning titles - but it’s always been a dream of mine to play in England. The WSL is full of good teams and this is a great opportunity for me to test myself against the best players in the world.

“I’m a defender who is confident on the ball and I do everything for the team. I feel like the Club’s values match mine and I’m really looking forward to continuing my development here.”

Manager Rehanne Skinner is pleased to welcome Nyström to east London and shared her delight at adding another defensive option to the team.

She said: "We’ve been monitoring Eva’s progress for a little while now so I’m delighted to be able to welcome her to the Club.

"We’ve been keen to add to our defensive options during this transfer window to complement our existing squad depth, and we think Eva will be a great addition to the group.

"Eva is a confident, ball playing centre-back who is technically astute. She has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing her development in a West Ham shirt moving forwards.”

Nyström made her competitive debut for Helsinki-based side FC Viikingit at just 15 years old and made the switch to PK-35 Vantaa two years later, where she clinched the Kansallinen Liiga title in 2018.

The defender then switched allegiances to begin her footballing journey in Sweden with AIK in 2019, scoring eight goals in 26 appearances in the second division, before moving to top-flight side Umeå IK a year later.

On the international stage, Nyström has received 24 caps for Finland, starting every match in their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 qualifying campaign that saw The Boreal Owls book their place at this summer’s tournament.

Everyone at West Ham United would like to welcome Eva to the Club and wish her every success in Claret and Blue.
