West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season.
The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.
Capped 31 times by England, Phillips started every game as the Three Lions reached the final of UEFA Euro 2020 and appeared at the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals.
At club level, he led his boyhood club Leeds United to the Premier League before transferring to Manchester City in summer 2022 and winning the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup last year.
With West Ham challenging for European qualification and through to the UEFA Europa League round of 16, and a UEFA European Championship finals to target with England this coming summer, Phillips has huge motivation to produce his very best in a Claret and Blue shirt.
“I’m really pleased to be here,” said the Yorkshireman, who will wear the No11 shirt. “There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now.
“There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the Club and I can’t wait to be part of it.
“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season."
Manager David Moyes believes Phillips will add a great deal to his squad for what promises to be an exciting second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
“We are really pleased to bring a player of Kalvin’s quality to West Ham United,” said Moyes, who adds Phillips to a group of central midfielders which includes James Ward-Prowse, Edson Álvarez and Tomáš Souček.
“We’ve been big admirers of him for a long time and we believe that he will add strength and competition to our squad.
“Kalvin is an England international midfielder, with proven Premier League experience. We’re excited to welcome him into the group and look forward to working with him.”
Born in Leeds in December 1995, Phillips joined Leeds United’s Academy at the age of 14 in 2010 and captained the club at youth and development levels before making his senior debut at 19 in April 2015.
Phillips established himself as a regular at 20 and played a starring role as the Whites won promotion to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa and he personally earned EFL Championship PFA Team of the Year honours in 2019/20.
Such were the quality of his displays that Phillips made his England debut before playing in the Premier League when he appeared in a UEFA Nations League tie against Denmark in September 2020. The following summer, he was an ever-present as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the UEFA Euro 2020 final before being beaten on penalties by Italy.
After another solid Premier League season, Pep Guardiola moved for Phillips in July 2022. Competition for places saw the midfielder appear 31 times for the Citizens across 18 months, during which he was selected and appeared for England at the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.
With proven Premier League and international pedigree, the midfielder will add his defensive and distributive qualities and combative character to the Irons squad.
Everyone at West Ham United would like to welcome Kalvin and his family to London Stadium and wish him every success for his time in Claret and Blue.
