West Ham United women’s team is delighted to confirm the signing of Swedish midfielder Marika Bergman Lundin.
The 24-year-old makes the move to England from UEFA Women’s Champions League side BK Häcken, where she has spent the past two seasons.
An attacking midfielder who likes to drive forward and score goals from distance, Bergman Lundin becomes Rehanne Skinner’s fourth signing of the January window, following the arrivals of Kristie Mewis, Katrina Gorry and Shelina Zadorsky.
Bergman Lundin is excited to get going in east London and hopes to make an instant impact.
She said: “It feels so good to be at West Ham and I’m really excited to get started. I wanted a fresh challenge and when West Ham showed an interest, it felt like the right place for me.
“The women’s game in England has grown over the last few years and it’s been nice to see from a far, but it makes you want to be a part of it.
“I’m a player who likes to be on the ball and be creative with my passes. I also like a good tackle! I want to win everything and help the team however I can.”
Skinner is pleased to add the talented midfielder to the squad.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming Marika to the Club,” the manager confirmed. “We have been impressed with Marika’s consistency for some time, both in Sweden and in the Champions League.
“Marika is a forward thinking, creative midfielder who’s work ethic and tenacity aligns perfectly with our playing style. Marika will also provide additional experience in our midfield that will help to strengthen the squad moving forwards.”
Born in July 1999, Bergman Lundin came through the ranks at Landvetter IF, her hometown club located on the outskirts of Gothenburg.
She joined the then-named Kopparbergs/Göteborg (now BK Häcken), making her first-team debut in April 2017 in a draw with Kvarnsveden.
She then moved to second tier side Jitex BK, where she excelled, scoring eight goals in 16 matches in the Elitettan. After one season, Bergman Lundin made the move north to IK Uppsala Fotboll, where she played more than 70 times, scoring eight goals across two seasons.
Bergman Lundin has been a regular for BK Häcken in both the Damallsvenskan and the Champions League since joining them in 2022. In the 2023 Swedish season, the midfielder played in all 26 matches, picking up three goals and three assists as the Gothenburg-based outfit narrowly missed out on the title.
This season, Häcken reached the last 16 in the Champions League, and have beaten FC Twente, Paris FC and Real Madrid, as well as drawing 0-0 with Chelsea. Bergman Lundin has started five of their seven European matches this term.
A versatile player, Bergman Lundin featured three times for Sweden U19s earlier in her career.
Everyone at West Ham United would like to welcome Marika to the Club and wish her every success in her career in Claret and Blue.
