West Ham United will take on Olympiacos, SC Freiburg and FK TSC in the group stage of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League.
Friday afternoon’s draw in Monaco placed the Hammers in Group A alongside their opponents from Greece, Germany and Serbia.
Having lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy on that unforgettable night in Prague in early June, the Hammers were seeded in Pot 1 for the draw, meaning they could be matched with any of the 24 clubs in Pots 2, 3 or 4 apart from Brighton & Hove Albion, in Pot 3, as teams from the same country cannot be drawn in the same group.
David Moyes’ men are competing in Europe for a third successive season, marking the first time in West Ham United history they have achieved that feat, with the campaign set to get underway on Thursday 21 September.
Our Pot 2 opponents are Super League Greece side Olympiacos. The Athens-based side came third in their domestic league last term to quaiify for the Europa League and defeated Čukarički of Serbia in the play-off round.
From Pot 3 came SC Freiburg from Germany. The Breisgau-Brasilianer came fifth in the Bundesliga last term and are looking forward to the sixth European campaign in their history. Freiburg reached the Europa League round of 16 last season before losing to Juventus.
Group A is completed by FK TSC from Pot 4. The Serbian side finished second in their domestic league last term and enter the Europa League having been defeated by Braga in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
Now the draw has taken place, clubs will hold discussions with each other, UEFA and other relevant stakeholders to decide and confirm the fixture list.
The matches will be played on the following Thursday evenings (subject to confirmation):
21 September 2023: Matchday 1
5 October 2023: Matchday 2
26 October 2023: Matchday 3
9 November 2023: Matchday 4
30 November 2023: Matchday 5
14 December 2023: Matchday 6
The group winners will progress directly to the round of 16, while the group runners-up will face a preliminary knockout round against the eight third placed teams from the UEFA Champions League groups. Third placed UEFA Europa League teams transfer to the preliminary knockout round of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
