Being able to score with a header isn’t as easy as it sounds. Indeed, it is a unique skill that often serves as a crucial asset on the football pitch, and helps an individual stand out from the crowd.
Throughout West Ham United’s 129-year history, an endless list of stunning headed strikes have hit the back of the net. While height might be an advantage for some players, our list also highlights the importance of having excellent jumping skills and powerful neck muscles to change the ball’s direction towards goal.
The Hammers are the last team from outside the top-flight to win the FA Cup, and that came via a rare, but stunning Sir Trevor Brooking header against Arsenal in 1980, while in more recent times, we saw Mohammed Kudus become the hero on his full West Ham debut early in the 2023/24 season with a superb header against FK TSC Bačka Topola at London Stadium.
Former Irons marksman Andy Carroll, who is widely regarded as one of the best in football with his head, was regularly prone to a trademark towering header in Claret and Blue. ‘The Big Man’ has unsurprisingly netted some of the Club’s most memorable headers, featuring no less than six times in the video above.
Goals against Liverpool, Manchester United, Swansea, Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Stoke are included as some of his best, but they certainly weren’t his only memorable strikes for the Club.
Other goals include efforts from the likes of Lucas Paquetá, Jarrod Bowen, Frank Lampard, Michail Antonio, Winston Reid, Ricardo Vaz Tê, Clive Allen, John Hartson, Carlton Cole and Angelo Ogbonna, among others.
