James Ward-Prowse has been delighted by West Ham United’s start to the 2023/24 campaign and says there is still plenty more to come from his new side.
The Hammers saw off Sheffield United by a 2-0 scoreline on Saturday, earning a fourth Premier League win of campaign and maintaining their early seventh position in the table.
With a first victory in the UEFA Europa League and progress in the Carabao Cup under their belts as well, Ward-Prowse has enjoyed a stellar start to life in east London.
Saturday’s win came courtesy of first-half goals from the in-form duo Jarrod Bowen and Tomáš Souček, with Ward-Prowse contributing strongly in the middle of the park.
However, the England international admitted to a slight frustration that the Irons could not yet more handsomely, having established that strong platform, and says that gives them plenty to work on as they seek further improvement.
“We’re really pleased with the performance,” the No7 stated. “It was a tough game on Saturday – every game in the Premier League is tough – but especially coming up against a team who had a difficult week last week.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but the two early goals helped us and I think we’re a little bit disappointed that we couldn’t build on that [with more goals] in the second half.”
It is not just the team as a collective that has impressed this season – Ward-Prowse has also shone individually.
The 28-year-old has registered two goals and five assists in his first seven games as a Hammer and he paid tribute to everyone at the Hammers – from the fans to staff behind the scenes – for helping him settle so quickly following his move from the south coast.
“Everybody at the Club has been incredibly welcoming to me,” he added. “I knew a couple of the lads before arriving here, which made things easier, but the Player Care team, all of the staff at the training ground, everybody has been so welcoming to me, made me feel straight at home and allowed me to do my thing on the pitch.
“Of course the fans have been terrific, and it helps that we’ve had a good start and we’ve had a few performances against some of the top teams. There are plenty of positives and lots to build on.”
