West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka believes our victory over Newcastle United was fully deserved after he put the seal on an impressive 2-0 triumph in the North-East on Monday night with his first goal for the Club.
After Tomáš Souček opened the scoring inside ten minutes, right-back Wan-Bissaka tucked away the Hammers’ second goal after the restart, having latched onto Jarrod Bowen’s defence-splitting pass, paving the way for our second away victory of the Premier League campaign on Tyneside.
And Wan-Bissaka says that this is just the beginning, and believes victory against the Magpies can be a turning point as Julen Lopetegui’s charges aim to battle their way back into Europe after indifferent form in the early part of the season.
“It was a proud moment [to score my first West Ham United goal] and to score it in today’s game after a big team performance as well,” Wan-Bissaka beamed.
“As the ball came to me, I wanted to just hit it as soon as possible, so that’s what I did, and thankfully it went in off the post. I enjoyed the celebrations as well.
“We played well tonight and stuck together as a unit right until the end and also managed to keep a clean sheet, which is important.”
Wan-Bissaka’s budding partnership with Irons captain Bowen has offered promising signs for the Claret and Blue faithful, and their ability to complement each other was crucial to success over Newcastle.
“I’m really enjoying playing with him [Bowen], and I’m beginning to understand him more each game, and I am learning when to make runs down the line and when not to make them,” confirmed Wan-Bissaka.
“I feel like a result like this has been coming. We’ve been training very hard, especially over the break, and we came here today and showed it. We will head into the game against Arsenal on Saturday with confidence and continue to play together as a team.
“He [Julen Lopetegui] has told us that is just the start, and we need to push on from this result from here and keep on going.”
