Ueki and Gorry in action as Japan and Australia secure wins at the Olympics

Both Riko Ueki and Katrina Gorry were in 2024 Paris Olympic Games action on Sunday evening, as they helped their respective nations to victory in their second group stage matches.

Japan secured their first win of the Games in dramatic style, as they scored twice in second-half stoppage time to beat Brazil 2-1 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Ueki came off the bench after 57 minutes, with Nadeshiko 1-0 down after Jheniffer had found the opening goal of the contest just a minute earlier and Japan had missed the chance to score from the penalty spot.

However, they would be awarded their second penalty of the game, which Saki Kumagai calmly side-footed beyond Lorena.

And the turnaround was complete when Momoko Tanikawa scored what would prove to be the winner with an emphatic strike from range, securing her nation's first three points of the competition.

Meanwhile, Gorry played 57 minutes for Australia as they edged Zambia 6-5 in a thrilling comeback at the Stade de Nice.

The game was the second-highest-scoring game ever witnessed at a women’s Olympic football tournament, with the Matildas struggling for much of the match as Zambia took advantage of a number of mishaps to race into a 5-2 lead at the time of Gorry's departure from the pitch.

However, after a Ngambo Musole own-goal, captain Steph Catley scored from a free-kick and the penalty spot, before Michelle Heyman bagged a 90th-minute winner to bring an end to a rollercoaster of a match and give Tony Gustavsson’s team their first win of the Games.

The final group stage matches for both Ueki and Gorry take place on Wednesday. Japan face Nigeria in their final clash of Group C (4pm BST), knowing a win would see them advance. Australia will be looking for a similar result in their final fixture against the United States in Group B (6pm BST).
