West Ham United is delighted to announce that Tyron Akpata has signed his first professional contract with the Club.
The 17-year-old midfielder has long been a key component of the Hammers’ youth set-up, having first signed terms at U15 level, while he was part of the U18 side that claimed the U18 Premier League South and FA Youth Cup double in 2022/23.
Recognised for the energy and leadership he provides on the pitch, Akpata wore the captain’s armband during last season’s FA Youth Cup campaign, and in all competitions he netted three goals in 26 appearances during 2023/24.
Akpata said: “It’s a great feeling to sign this contract, and I’m so chuffed to start a new chapter at West Ham United as a professional footballer.
“I’ve been here for a few years now, which does make it extra special. I’ve worked under some different coaches, who have all helped me massively with my development, and I hope I can continue growing in the future.
“I’m really excited about the new season. I’m just going to get my head down, try and play as many games as I can for the U21s, and do my best to make the biggest impact possible.”
Hailing from nearby Dagenham, Akpata is clear about how much signing a professional deal at a Club so close to his heart means for both himself and his family.
And after seeing the likes of George Earthy and Kaelan Casey progress through the age-groups to make their mark on the senior stage last term, he is hopeful he can follow a similar path towards the first team over the coming months.
He added: “My parents have done countless things for me since I was young, so signing a pro deal is a really proud moment for all of us. All I can do is keep working hard to try and repay them.
“I’m over the moon to join my friends - like Josh [Briggs] and Dan [Rigge] - in signing a pro contract. It’s a great group, and we’re going to have some good times ahead.
“It was really nice to see George and Kaelan get given a chance last season, and that does help give you belief about what could happen in the future. I’m just going to give everything I’ve got for this Club.”
Akpata’s new contract represents the latest example of continued investment from the Club in the next generation of talent, and Academy Manager Kenny Brown is thrilled to see another young starlet commit his future to West Ham United.
He said: “Tyron had a really good scholarship, and we’re all looking forward to seeing how he progresses and develops at Rush Green with the U21s.
“As well as his on-field attributes, I think the way he goes about his business is one of the things that stands out about him. He’s very well-liked by his peers and the staff, and he’s the sort of character you want around.
“He’s a local boy with huge potential, so it’s great he’s staying here at West Ham United. We’re really confident about how he’ll handle the increased demands as a professional, so it’s exciting times ahead.”
Everyone at West Ham United would like to congratulate Tyron on signing his first professional contract and wish him every success in Claret and Blue.
