Thestrup: We want to put in a good performance in front of our fans

Amalie Thestrup is looking forward to the prospect of facing off against her former club in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.

West Ham United Women face Liverpool at Chigwell Construction Stadium in Dagenham, with the clash kicking off at 5pm (BST).

Thestrup played for Liverpool during the 2020/21 season, where she scored four times in 17 appearances in Red as Liverpool failed to gain promotion from the Women’s Championship.

The Denmark international says that the Club has obviously changed a lot since then, but she is looking forward to facing them on Sunday in another important fixture in the WSL – as the Irons look to find a way back to form after defeats in their previous three league games.

“It’s a big game for us, one that we’re looking forward to,” Thestrup told whufc.com.

“I think it’s a must win game for us, particularly being at home and being in front of our own fans – we’re really excited to get back to Dagenham and we want to put in a good performance for them.

“There’s been quite a lot of change at Liverpool since I was there, but I know some of the girls there from my time on Merseyside. I think it always adds a fun element when you’re coming up against an old side, but I do think that once you cross the white line then you forget about who you’re playing against and you just want to win.”

Both teams come into the fixture looking to make certain that they distance themselves from the one relegation place in the WSL, and whilst both teams will be quietly confident that they have enough points to not be dragged in.

For Thestrup, it’s a chance for the Hammers to show that they are better than their most recent results have shown.

“There’s a lot riding on Sunday’s game, both teams are very close to each other in the table, so it’s a real opportunity for us to distance ourselves from them, but also from those further down the table.

“We want to be looking up and forward, rather than worrying about what is going on behind us,” she said.

The hardworking forward has been with the Club for over two months since joining on loan from PSV on 31 January – and she revealed that she’s enjoying the challenge of playing at the highest level and one of the best leagues in the world with West Ham.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Thestrup smiled. “The WSL has really developed, and I think that every single year it takes a step forward, both on the field and off the field.

“It’s a super exciting league to be playing in, playing with and against some of the best players in the world, it’s definitely a great opportunity for me to develop even more as a player as well,” she concluded.

Tickets are available for the match against Liverpool on Sunday and are priced from as little as £13 for Adults and £5 for Juniors.

Tickets can be purchased online until 3pm on the day of the match, or from the ticket office at Chigwell Construction Stadium, which opens at 3:30pm on Sunday.
