Team News: Kudus and Cresswell start against Everton

Mohammed Kudus makes his first Premier League start in West Ham United’s home game with Everton on Sunday afternoon.

After featuring off the substitutes’ bench on six occasions and scoring a late equaliser against Newcastle United in the Hammers’ last home match three weeks ago, the Ghana attacking midfielder is named in the starting XI by manager David Moyes. Tomáš Souček drops to the bench.

Aaron Cresswell also makes his first Premier League start, and appearance, of the season at left-back in place of the suspended Emerson.

While Sunday’s game marks Kudus’s full Premier League debut, Cresswell makes his 274th start and 284th appearance for the Irons in the competition, ranking second behind only Mark Noble in Club history.

Those are the only two changes from last Sunday’s defeat at Aston Villa, but end a run of five matches in which manager Moyes named the same starting XI in the Premier League.

Alphonse Areola starts in goal, having deputised for the ill Łukasz Fabiański in the midweek UEFA Europa League Group A defeat at Olympiacos in Greece.

Vladimír Coufal also missed the trip to Piraeus with tightness, but the Czech Republic international has loosened up and takes his place at right-back, seeking his fifth Premier League assist of the season.

Captain Kurt Zouma, who faces the club where he spent a season on loan in 2018/19, and Nayef Aguerd continue their partnership at the heart of the defence.

Edson Álvarez anchors the midfield alongside James Ward-Prowse, who has scored four goals and assisted another in 20 career appearances against Everton.

Kudus will form part of an exciting four-man attacking quartet that also includes midweek goalscorer Lucas Paquetá, six-goal Jarrod Bowen and the Hammers’ all-time leading Premier League marksman Michail Antonio.

The bench will be comprised of goalkeeper Fabiański, defenders Thilo Kehrer, Dinos Mavropanos and Angelo Ogbonna, midfielders Souček and Pablo Fornals, wingers Saïd Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet and striker Danny Ings.
