Talking Points | Technical Director Tim Steidten on Lopetegui and recruitment

West Ham United Technical Director Tim Steidten joined Head Coach Julen Lopetegui at London Stadium to speak to members of the broadcast and written press ahead of the start of pre-season training.

Appointed to his post 12 months ago, Steidten is responsible for the Club’s overarching player recruitment strategy and scouting department, and has already forged a strong working relationship with the new man at the Hammers’ helm.

While commenting on recent discussions with current members of West Ham’s playing staff, the German native also answered questions about recruitment and his hopes for the summer ahead.

After the first meeting we had with Julen, I was 100 per cent convinced he was the right coach for us

Why Lopetegui is the perfect fit

We were looking for an ambitious coach who showed a hunger to achieve more. It was also important to bring someone in who fitted our profile in terms of style of play, philosophy, communication and integrating young players. Julen fits that profile, and he also speaks four languages which is key. After the first meeting we had with Julen, I was 100 per cent convinced he was the right coach for us.

Recruitment plans

For us it’s not just about the individuals, but we’re also looking for the profiles, who will have good and close relationships with Julen. The two of us are talking every day now, trying to identify players with that right profile.

I can’t comment on specific positions or the exact planning we’re doing, but we’re looking to build the squad and it will be a busy summer for all of us. The board have done a good job over recent years, so we’re in a good position where we won’t have to sell to spend money.

England is where we are, so we have to work in that market as best as we possibly can. Ultimately it doesn’t matter where players come from - it’s our job to find the right players for West Ham United - but the English market is important for us.

Hammers heroes

I’ve spoken to Edson Álvarez, who has suffered an injury while away with Mexico. Our medical team are in contact with the Mexico staff, and he’s doing the first part of his rehab with them before he comes back to England. The most important thing at the moment is that communication, and making sure everyone’s aligned.

I’ve spoken to Lucas Paquetá as well, and I actually visited him when I was over in Brazil watching some games. We’re looking forward to having him back with us, because he’s a really important member of our team and the West Ham family.
