How did your Supporters' Club begin?

We (the two founders) were watching the West Ham against Arsenal game in Vienna back in 2011 in the same pub the Austrian Gunners watched this game and they were sitting there very quiet, only about ten people.

So, after a few pints we became motivated to connect all Austrian West Ham United supporters and show how to watch a football game with noise and passion. Well, the Austrian Irons were born. Subsequently, we registered our Supporters' Club as an official club in the Austrian register of associations. In fact, since 2011 we are an official club in Austria.

Are West Ham popular in Austria?

In general, other teams are supported in Austria, so most of us became West Ham fans over time and are not born into it. However, there are some exceptions.

How do you follow the Hammers on a matchday?

We enjoy some vintage Hammers displays in a bar owned by one of our members, who grew up in Ilford, Essex. The name of the bar is ‘The Tube Station – Vienna’ and is located in the 3rd Viennese district. We also visit London Stadium on average once or twice a season, but not more often for obvious reasons.

What is your matchday routine?

Going to the Tube Station and having a seat on our designated table. Barry, the bar owner, then starts playing ‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’ before the broadcast starts. We also have a small bubbles machine in the bar which is used before the game and every time the Irons score a goal (similar to the London Stadium). Additionally, we have a shot called ‘West Ham United’ which is claret and blue and served after every goal on the house.

When visiting London on matchday we normally meet with some friends who are Season Ticket Holders in pubs in Mile End before then moving to London Stadium.

How can other supporters join Austrian Irons?

Reaching out on social media or simply walking in to the Tube Station. We are happy to welcome everyone who is supporting West Ham United and knows how to behave.

I personally have been a West Ham fan all my life, am still a Season Ticket Holder now with my son and try to attend matches when I can
