Crysencio Summerville cut a frustrated figure on the pitch and in the interview room following West Ham United’s goalless Premier League draw with Everton at London Stadium.
The Dutch winger went as close as anyone to breaking the deadlock on Saturday, only for his second-half shot to roll past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and bounce to safety off the base of the far post, leaving Summerville with his head in his gloved hands.
The No7 was involved in much of West Ham’s best attacking moments in his 83 minutes on the pitch, combining well with the likes of Emerson and Lucas Paquetá and carrying a threat, particularly in the second half.
Ultimately, though, Summerville was unable to repeat his goalscoring of the Hammers’ previous home match, which ended in a 2-1 victory over Manchester United, and he and his teammates were forced to settle for a point.
"I think we've all got mixed feelings after that," Summerville said. "We recovered from a slow start, I think we showed a lot of character in the second half, and in the end we were unlucky not to come away with the win.
"At half-time the manager [Julen Lopetegui] said we were playing like we were a bit afraid, and we weren't sure why, but in the second half we were much more like ourselves.
"We were looking for the goal, and I'm a bit frustrated with myself that I wasn't able to score. I just need to carry on working at the training ground and make sure that next time I'm in that position it finishes with a goal."
While substitute Danny Ings was among the other West Ham players to go close to breaking the deadlock - particularly at the death, when he was denied by Pickford - the Hammers' defence shone throughout the 90 minutes, earning their second Premier League clean sheet of the season.
And though predominantly an attacking operator, Summerville contributed to the shutout with an incredible back-tracking run and challenge in the first half to cut out an Abdoulaye Doucouré chance, showcasing his dedication to the team and their hopes of building up through the ranks.
"We are a team, and I will die for the team," added Summerville. "It was a bit of a strange action, but I was determined to lot let him score, and I managed to do that.
"The clean sheet is good, and we have to take the positives into the international break now and come back stronger. We know overall this season it's not been great, but there are good things and we are confident we can keep building."
