Souček: I’m feeling fresh and ready for the season

Tomáš Souček is ready for another marathon campaign with West Ham United again set to fight on four fronts in the months ahead.

Having triumphed in the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, the Hammers are back in Europe for a third consecutive campaign – this time in the UEFA Europa League.

With the aim of an improved Premier League finish also on the agenda, along with domestic cup duties to come, Souček is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

The Czech Republic midfielder, who registered an assist for Jarrod Bowen’s goal in Saturday’s season opening 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth, says he is feeling refreshed after the summer break and prepared to play his part across 2023/24.

“I feel fresh because we had many, many games last season and now we had a few weeks rest and not that long a pre-season,” he explained.

“My legs are ready and I want to [play a big role in the season ahead].”

The Irons looked on course for an opening day three points when Bowen curled them in front with an exquisite strike from 20 yards after 51 minutes at Vitality Stadium, but they were pegged back by Dominic Solanke’s late equaliser.

For Souček and his West Ham teammates, there was the sense of disappointment that they could not hold on to the lead, but plenty of aspects to build on as the campaign clicks into gear.

“I was happy when we scored the goal and all of us wanted to win here,” he continued. “We wanted three points, but we drew so we are disappointed because we wanted to stay as high as possible.

“We’ve got a point away and now we have to look forward to our first game at home.

“I could have scored twice in the first half, I hit the post and had a chance from a corner. In the end I did an assist for Jarrod and it was a great goal. I was happy for that but I feel good [so I’m looking forward to the season].”
