Smith earns 50th Scotland cap as Euro 2025 qualifiers begin

Kirsty Smith earned her 50th cap for Scotland on her return to the international fold as Scotland battled to a goalless draw with Serbia in the first of their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 qualifiers.

The 30-year-old defender was making her first appearance for her country in over a year, and lined up in a backline that was tested by the hosts.

Former West Ham United forward Jane Ross came closest for Pedro Martínez Losa’s side, as she hit the crossbar from distance after coming off the bench at half-time.

However, there would be nothing to split the two sides in the opening match of Euro 2025 Group B2.

Elsewhere, Emma Snerle helped Denmark to victory in their opening League A, Group A2 clash, beating Czechia 3-1 away from home. Amalie Vangsgaard had put the Danes ahead after only seven minutes, but Andrea Stašková was able to draw level just before half-time.

In the second half, Snerle came off the bench and laid on an assist for Stine Ballisager Pedersen, who put her side ahead, before Josefine Hasbo made sure of victory on 72 minutes.

In the same group, Amber Tysiak and Belgium were on the wrong end of a thumping 7-0 home defeat to current world champions Spain, in what was the toughest of starts to qualifying for The Red Flames.

Salma Paralluelo netted a hat-trick, Esther González scored twice, while Jenni Hermoso and Sheila García all weighed in with goals on a rampant night for La Roja.

In the final action of Saturday evening, Jessie Stapleton came on as a late substitute for Republic of Ireland as they battled to a narrow 1-0 defeat to France in League A, Group A3.

The Girls in Green were undone early on when Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored after only six minutes, and were second best on the night, but Eileen Gleeson's side recovered from the setback and showed resilience to deny the home side a more comfortable lead.
