West Ham United women’s team manager Rehanne Skinner was delighted with how clinical her side were in their 4-1 hammering of London City Lionesses in the Women’s League Cup on Sunday afternoon.
A brace from Viviane Asseyi and goals from Manuela Paví and Riko Ueki helped the Hammers maintain their spot at the top of the Group C standings, taking the team’s goal tally in the competition to ten.
Paví’s strike was a significant one, as it marked her first for the Club, while Asseyi took herself to four goals in the Women’s League Cup this season after the two she netted in the Irons’ 6-1 win at home to Portsmouth in October.
“It’s a fantastic result, obviously we’re delighted with the goals,” said Skinner after victory at Hayes Lane.
“Paví getting her first goal is a massive one and I just thought we took the goals really well to be fair.
"The game was difficult as the conditions were really challenging, so it was always going to be a bit of a game of two halves. When the wind was with you, it was a completely different game to when it was against you, so we’re delighted with the result.
“It took us a little while with us defending with the wind against us in the first half, but in the second half the quality was so much better on the ball, and I think we created some fantastic chances.
“Obviously the goalscorers are delighted, it’s important to get a few goals as well, and that just helps to build confidence for the team. It’s been a really positive day today.
“When we come back we’ve got three games in a week, so it’s a great position to be in going into the international break. Everyone is fit and healthy as well, which is important.”
After full-time, the players and staff went over to thank the travelling fans in the away end at Hayes Lane and they were applauded for another dazzling display in the Women’s League Cup.
“The fans are fantastic,” said a delighted Skinner. “It was difficult to hear them with the wind, but still we could hear them! I think the support has been tremendous and we’re really grateful for that.
“I think there’s been frustrations with us collectively, in terms of the performances not getting results we felt we deserved in WSL games, but the players are working incredibly hard and the fans being here every week is just helping us to keep moving forward, and we will keep getting results.”
