West Ham United 2022-24 scholars

School of 2022-24 | Matching success in the classroom

West Ham United is delighted to announce that all 12 scholars from the 2022-24 cohort have successfully obtained their BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sporting Excellence and Performance, equivalent to three A-Levels, as well as their Sporting Excellence Professional (SEP) Level 3 apprenticeship.

In addition to these academic achievements, the young Hammers have also added a UEFA C Coaching Qualification and Laws of the Game Refereeing Qualification to their CV.

As one of the most successful Academy cohorts in recent years, including a number of players that clinched a historic FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League South double, their success on the pitch has been matched by equally impressive achievements in the classroom.

Among the top performers, Tyron Akpata stood out by achieving the highest possible marks in his studies. Alongside excelling academically, Akpata was also one of the leading appearance makers for the U18s throughout his scholarship. His impressive performances on the pitch earning him his first professional contract at the conclusion of his scholarship in June.

Academy Education Coordinator, Luke Stone, who supported the group throughout their two-year scholarship, praised the cohort for bringing the same competitive edge from the pitch into their studies.

“All of them achieved outstanding grades, with nine surpassing their expected targets. We've also had nine of these scholars sign their first professional contracts, and one has secured a US scholarship,” Stone revealed. “Their approach to education as well as football has been second to none. They carried their work ethic from the training ground into every aspect of their development, whether it was analysis, gym work, or education. They wanted to be the best at everything they did. We had really healthy competition in the classroom which translated into their assignments.”

Speaking further about their qualities, Stone added: “They embodied all the values we strive to instil here. They supported each other, worked incredibly hard, and showed tremendous commitment. I couldn’t have asked for a better group!”

West Ham United prides itself on providing a holistic approach to player development, focused on nurturing not only talented footballers but well-rounded individuals.

“Even for those who go on to have fantastic careers lasting 15 years or more, they will still have plenty of life ahead of them. It’s about preparing them for that future,” Stone continued. “The better they are at absorbing information, the better they become as footballers and as people. These qualifications mean that, should they decide to pursue university or further education at any point, they have the tools to do so.”

The 2022-24 cohort is the first group to complete their scholarship under the supervision of Kenny Brown since he took over as Academy Manager. Reflecting on their achievements, Brown emphasised the importance of the Academy’s broader responsibilities.

“This is another vital aspect of their development. We’re not just a football club, we have a duty to help these young men grow in all areas of life. It speaks to the quality of our education department. What we provide the players in terms of learning opportunities, they give back through their engagement and commitment.

“It’s not just about effort on the pitch or in the gym, there has to be a balance in the classroom too. This generation of players has shown they understand that balance. These qualifications will stand them in good stead for the future. Of course, we hope they won’t need them just yet, but they are there as a foundation. Full credit goes to both the education team and the players for their achievements.”
