Rayan Oyebade signs first professional contract

West Ham United is delighted to announce that Academy defender Rayan Oyebade has signed his first professional contract with the Club.

Hailing from north London, Oyebade joined West Ham United as a schoolboy in the U14 age group. The 17-year-old played grassroots football for ten years at local sides Broadwater Farm and Focus Football before catching the eye of West Ham United Academy scouts. Following a successful trial at Chadwell Heath in 2021, the young centre-half never looked back. Just a year after signing, he made his junior international debut for England U15s.

Signing my first professional contract means the world to me, my family, and everyone who has helped me throughout my journey. I’m incredibly grateful

Oyebade said: “I joined the Academy quite late compared to other players, and it was challenging at first to keep up technically. But after a while, with hard work, I managed to get up to speed. Now, having signed my professional contract, I’m delighted.”

After signing scholarship terms in 2023, Oyebade endured a challenging first year, with injuries hindering his progress. A hamstring tear was followed by an ankle injury, ruling him out for a total of eight months. While his peers signed professional deals, Oyebade never gave in, working hard to get back to full fitness and show that West Ham United is where he belongs.

He continued: “During my first year as a scholar, I struggled a lot with injuries. It’s tough when you’re trying to make an impression and show you’ve got what it takes to turn professional. I just kept my head down, worked hard, and it was such a relief when I found out about my first contract. I know there’s still a lot of work to do, but this is where it all begins.”

Kicking on in his second year, Oyebade has captained the U18s on six occasions this season and helped Lauris Coggin’s side reach their first ever Premier League Cup final.

“Recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to captain the U18s and lead the team out, which has been a huge honour,” he said. “I’m grateful the coaches have put their trust in me. It’s an exciting time for the group. Since joining West Ham at U14s, this is my first cup final, so I’m really looking forward to it!”

Joining Oyebade and his close family at his contract signing, West Ham United Academy Manager Kenny Brown praised the young defender’s determination in overcoming injury setbacks and is confident he has what it takes to make an impression at the next level.

He said: “The way Rayan has applied himself since joining at U14s has been exemplary. Coming from grassroots football, he showed a lot of potential when he first arrived at Chadwell Heath. He’s since earned a scholarship and now a professional contract, which we’re absolutely delighted about. He’s had to deal with plenty of adversity through injuries, but he’s come through stronger, mentally and physically.

“Off the pitch, Rayan is humble and unassuming, and on it, he’s consistent and provides the team with great balance as a left-sided defender. We’re more than confident that, as he transitions to Rush Green with the U21s, he’ll adapt really well.

“He’s captained the U18s several times because he leads by example. He’s earned the respect of his teammates and the staff, and everyone is absolutely thrilled he’s committed his future to the Club.

“Every day, Rayan wants to get better. He applies himself just as much in his education and the gym as he does in training and games. He’s a fantastic lad to have around, and we’re looking forward to a bright future with him.”

Everyone at West Ham United would like to congratulate Rayan on signing his first professional contract and wish him every success in Claret and Blue.
