Seraina Piubel was delighted to see West Ham United women’s team turn things around in an entertaining affair against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
The Switzerland international was one of five different goalscorers in a scintillating 5-2 victory on a wet and windy clash at Chigwell Construction Stadium, as Rehanne Skinner’s side made it back-to-back wins in all competitions and climbed to eighth in the Barclays Women’s Super League standings.
Piubel was at the heart of everything good in east London, as she not only notched her first goal in the WSL, but she also laid on an assist for Viviane Asseyi’s finish, completing an eye-catching move.
The 24-year-old was pleased to be able to secure victory on the side's first game back after the international break, and she and the team are aiming for more success this week when they face Southampton in the Women’s League Cup, before heading to Aston Villa in the final WSL fixture before the Christmas break.
“I’m very happy for the team and to score my first WSL goal,” she explained.
“We didn’t start the game well, and we had to react – but I knew when we scored our second goal that we could change this game. We grew into it and I think from when we scored our second, we played some really nice football.
“My finish was a little bit lucky to be honest, I think the defender might have got a little touch on the ball, but all the same, I’m very happy to be scoring and helping the team to a win."
Skinner’s side will be hoping to take the confidence taken from another good performance into their clash with the Saints on Wednesday, who currently sit in sixth position in the second division.
Piubel also explained that looking after themselves throughout a busy week of match action will be important if they are able to come away with what the whole team desires, which is more wins and more points.
“We know it’s a difficult week with the three matches in quick succession, but we’ve made a really good start here today by picking up a win.
“Our recovery will be really important between these matches because we want to come out of the games with three wins. Like I said, we’ve got the first one today but we want all three!
“We have a real togetherness in the group and our understanding on the pitch is improving with every match that we play. I also think that our performances are getting better and better too.”
