Jarrod Bowen hit the bar, while Saïd Benrahma forced a save from Gavin Bazunu as the Hammers searched for a second.
Although it ultimately did not arrive - and Saints sub Paul Onuachu hit the crossbar himself with a late header - but that first half goal settled the contest.
