Tomas Soucek versus Liverpool

In Pictures: Hammers beaten 2-1 by Liverpool

West Ham United sought a consecutive win in all competitions as Liverpool made the visit to London Stadium.

The Irons were unbeaten in the previous five matches but faced a Reds side who are also unbeaten in their four and claimed a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last time out.

Manager David Moyes named an unchanged starting XI for the midweek Premier League clash  and was seeking to mark his 60th birthday - celebrated on Tuesday - with another three points and a push up the table.

it was the perfect start at London Stadium too as Lucas Paquetá combined excellently with Michail Antonio. The duo put together a string of one-touch passes to carve their way through the Liverpool defence before our Brazilian playmaker fired in from outside the area on 12 minutes.

Liverpool hit back swiftly, levelling the score just six minutes later when Cody Gakpo collected the ball on the edge of the Hammers box and struck an effort into the bottom corner.

All square at the interval, and Declan Rice thought he had found Jarrod Bowen with a superb through-ball, which the attacker coolly placed in the bottom corner. However, a VAR check ruled that the No20 had been offside in the build-up.

The Reds got their opportunity to take the lead on 67 minutes when Andrew Roberton's corner found the head of fellow defender Joel Matip. The centre-back rose highest to power home a ferocious header.

Pressing for a late leveller, the hosts saw a late appeal for handball waved away by referee Chris Kavanagh, a decision that was upheld by VAR, andLiverpool clung on to claim the 2-1 win.

Our Club photographers were on hand to capture all the action and you can view their images in the gallery above!
