If his performance in Saturday’s Betway Cup win over Celta Vigo is anything to go by, Lucas Paquetá is in great shape going into the 2024/25 season.
As soon as the 26-year-old joined up with the Hammers on their Sunshine State Tour in Florida the week before last, he has looked fit and focused, and that showed in Saturday’s game.
The Brazilian made Jarrod Bowen’s opener with an inch-perfect lofted pass over the Celta defence, then scored a dazzling goal of his own, playing one-twos with Michail Antonio and Bowen before expertly clipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Speaking to West Ham TV, Paquetá expressed his joy at the performance, his excitement at working under new Head Coach Julen Lopetegui and enthused about his flourishing on-field relationship with England forward Bowen…
Lucas, you registered an assist and a goal and we got the win in a penalty shootout on a sunny afternoon, so how did you enjoy Saturday’s game?
“Yes, I was happy to be back on the pitch again, in front of our fans. It’s always special to play here. It was a good test; now it’s time to rest and prepare for the Premier League.”
You have looked in great shape in pre-season?
“Yes, I got a bit tired in the second half. It’s only been ten days since my first training session, so I’m happy with my effort in the first game back. I hope to be ready for when the competitive season gets underway and give my best.”
It looks like the players are embracing the new Head Coach’s philosophy?
“Yes, for sure. The lads have been speaking a lot about how he likes to do things. I’m here to learn, I want to evolve as a player under him and I hope my teammates will be happy.”
You tried that through ball a number of times and it paid off within six minutes when Jarrod got on the end of one to score. Your relationship is so good!
“Yes, Jarrod saw that one very well. We’ve been linking up really well since last season. Just by looking at each other we manage to understand one another. I’m very happy that he’s been able to score and I can help out with the assists.”
And now we have the final few days of preparation before hosting Aston Villa in our Premier League opener on Saturday. Are you excited?
“No doubt. The boys have been training hard and I hope we will be able to do a good match in front of our home fans and start the season off on the right foot with a win.”
