My Football Firsts | Guido Rodríguez

First game you watched live as a supporter?

Club Atlético Atlanta. It’s a team from back home in Argentina [from the Villa Crespo district of Buenos Aires]. My Grandad was a big fan and he used to take me to the games. You could say that’s when I really fell in love with football.

First football hero?

I’d have to say Javier Mascherano, I like his playing style. A great player in the Premier League as well as for the national team.

First football boots?

That’s a good one… They were astros by an Argentine brand called Calse, which I used for five-a-side. I would’ve had those when I was five years old.

First kit?

First kit was Pablo Giorello, designed by Papi Futbol, a white and red checkered kit, like Croatia’s one. It was my first ever team back in Buenos Aires, playing six-a-side. My first pro team kit was of course River Plate, the iconic big red stripe!

First mentor in football?

My first mentor would’ve been Alberto, one of my Dad’s friends who coached us at Pablo Giorello. He was good with us, a competitive guy who was driven by winning. We played to quite a good level in our category at the time.

First professional game?

Copa Argentina at River. The one I remember the best from my time at River was my first game at the Monumental, against Belgrano, which we won [3-0 in October 2014]. I got to the dressing room after the game and burst into tears. The atmosphere was crazy.

First professional goal?

It was also at River against Godoy Cruz. Third or fourth goal, assisted by Fernando Cavenaghi.

First red card?

That was in Mexico in Tijuana. Last game of the season, at home, I was booked twice.
