On My Day Off | Kaelan Casey

Members of the West Ham United squad discuss their main hobbies away from the football pitch, explaining what sparked their interest and advising how fellow Hammers can get involved. Starting a new series, Kaelan Casey reveals his love for darts!

How did you get into darts?

I think darts has become really popular in general, recently, and I’ve been swept up by the hype! I just started watching it on TV, particularly since Luke Littler has been on the scene, tearing it up. As a team, we’ve started playing it a lot between football sessions as we've got a board up at the training ground with a light and electronic scoring. It’s really good fun!

What do you like about it?

I like the challenge of hitting doubles - that’s the hardest part of playing darts! I like the fact it’s a sport you can play with your mates, or on your own as well. I also love the thrill of hitting a really big number, like a treble 20 when I’ve been aiming for it for ages!

How much time do you spend on it outside of football?

There was a period recently when I was playing it quite a lot, but over the summer and during pre-season I’ve been focusing other things a bit more. Once we’re back into the swing of things in the season properly, I’m going to try to spend some more time on the oche!

How good are you at darts, then?

I’m better than most of the other boys! I’m not too bad, I can definitely play.

Do you play on your own or with others?

I mostly play with others. I have played on my own a few times, but I much prefer taking someone on and beating them!

World Darts Championship

Have you ever been to any big darts events?

I haven’t, but my Dad has been a few times and says it is really good. I would like to go to the World Championship at Alexandra Palace as it’s near Christmas and New Year, and is the biggest tournament in darts. It looks like the most enjoyable one!

How much would you recommend it to people who aren’t familiar with it?

I would definitely recommend it, because it’s just such an enjoyable sport. You can play it outside when the weather is nice, and you can also play it inside as well, obviously. It’s a great way to relax, although it can be frustrating when things don’t go your way!

Can you share some tips about how someone could get involved in it?

I think the most important thing is to enjoy it, but it also requires a bit of patience and consistency. It’s a tough game and can go on for a while, but with practice anything is possible! Buy a cheap dartboard and some darts online, or visit a local pub or sports centre to see if you like it and avoid making holes in your wall at home!
