Members of the West Ham United squad discuss their main hobbies away from the football pitch, explaining what sparked their interest and advising how fellow Hammers can get involved. Today, England international forward Danny Ings shares his love for golf...
How did you get into it?
It was through a friend, to be honest, in and around the time of COVID. At the time, golf was about one of the only things that you could go outside and do at a sociable distance, and I just got the bug for it, really.
What do you like about it?
It’s a very challenging sport, so it’s quite exciting when you have a good round. There’s a really good social element to it as well, and I really enjoy going out with a few of the lads.
Do you do it on your own or with others?
I play with a few of the lads from back home, but also with the likes of Aaron [Cresswell] and also James [Ward-Prowse] before he went to Nottingham Forest on loan.
Do you know anyone involved in it?
I know Billy Horschel, because he’s a West Ham United fan. I’ve never played a round with him though, and don’t think I ever will, as it’ll be embarrassing for me!
Have you ever been to any big events associated with it?
I’ve always wanted to go to The Open Championship, and I think it’s definitely something that I’ll do later on in life.
How much time do you spend on it outside of football?
Not enough! It’s a sport that I definitely want to play a lot more.
How good are you at it?
In truth, average. I can get around the course! I don’t play enough to be good, but hopefully that can change one day.
How much would you recommend it to people who aren’t familiar with it?
I would highly recommend it. It’s one of those sports that even if you just go for the social element of it, then it’s good fun, and you’re off your phone for hours. It’s good fun!
Can you share some tips about how someone could get involved in it?
I’d recommend going down to your local golf club, getting on the range and whacking a few balls. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
