On My Day Off | Crysencio Summerville

Members of the West Ham United squad discuss their main hobbies away from the football pitch, explaining what sparked their interest and advising how fellow Hammers can get involved. Continuing a new series, Crysencio Summerville reveals his love for basketball!

How did you get into it?

I love to play on a basketball court because I love to watch NBA (National Basketball Association). My favourite players are LeBron James [of the Los Angeles Lakers] and Stephen Curry [of the Golden State Warriors], who are both all-time greats, and I always try to replicate their shots when I’m on the court.

I had a couple of players with my former team Leeds United who also loved to watch and play basketball, so I said to myself, why not get involved? I didn’t know I would love it as much as I do now.

What do you like about it?

When you’re a football player, it is exciting to know you’re also good at another sport as well. It’s all about trying new things. I think if you have your mind on football 24/7 then you can get a bit stressed as we’re always busy in football, so when you have the time to switch off from that then it is important to do so.

How much time do you spend on it outside of football?

I would say whenever I have the time that I try to play.

How good are you at it?

I am going to say that I am good, which I wasn’t sure I would be because of my height.

Do you do it on your own or with others?

I played with Illan Meslier, Pascal Struijk, Wilfried Gnonto, Georginio Rutter and Brenden Aaronson at Leeds United. We just played a lot of games and had free throws, and the last one to score had to do a forfeit. The level was good.

Do you know anyone involved in it?

I follow the NBA account on Instagram but don’t know any players personally. I support the LA Lakers.

Have you ever been to any big events associated with it?

I’ve not been to any yet, but I would really love to watch one at some point. Now that I live in London, it will be much easier to go to these events.

How much would you recommend it to people who aren’t familiar with it?

If you like to throw balls and do some tricks, then I would recommend it. I would also recommend watching it as well because you see the craziest of things.
