Michail Antonio is tracked by Edson Álvarez in Jamaica's Copa América meeting wth Mexico

Mexico defeat Jamaica in Copa América opener

Mexico defeated Jamaica 1-0 in their Copa América opener on Saturday night - but West Ham United's Edson Álvarez was forced off with a first-half injury.

The Hammers midfielder pulled up when sprinting back to defend a Jamaica attack and had to be helped from the field at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, with half-an-hour on the clock.

Michail Antonio later thought he had given the Reggae Boyz a 50th minute lead when he headed home from close range, only for a VAR review to chalk off his effort for offside.

Mexico upped the ante after their scare and scored the decisive goal with 21 minutes left thanks to Monterray's former KRC Genk left-back Gerardo Arteaga, who lashed home from the edge of the box.

There was plenty of encouragement for Antonio's side, however, who came close to shocking their opponents in front of a partisan crowd.

Álvarez's injury will now need to be assessed to determine his chances of making further appearances at the continental championship, with Mexico resuming their Group B campaign on Wednesday against Venezuela.

Jamaica's next fixture, also on Wednesday, sees them take on Group B's fourth nation, Ecuador.
