Li Mengwen

Mengwen | Everyone here at West Ham has been really welcoming

Li Mengwen is hoping that West Ham United women’s team can pick up their first win of the 2024/25 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign when they travel to Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The Irons are hoping that matchday four will prove to be the fixture that rewards them with three points, and Mengwen believes the team have what it takes to come out on top against the Toffees.

The China international defender has played a part in all four of the women’s team’s fixtures so far this season and has been slowly adapting to life on and off the pitch in east London.

Mengwen is looking forward to more minutes in Claret & Blue, and on an individual level, hopes to be able to help the team to better results in the near future.

“It’s been a busy start to life at West Ham,” Mengwen told whufc.com.

“I’ve been getting used to things on and off the pitch, and I feel like I’m settling now into how we want to play and my life here at West Ham.

“The first three matches we’ve had in the league have been quite tough games. I want to give my best for the team, and I know that I need to improve on my performances that I’ve shown so far. I need to be faster mentally, but that will come with time.”

Mengwen signed on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion on transfer deadline day, becoming the ninth signing of the window as Skinner made many additions to her squad.

She’s enjoyed her first four weeks in east London and is enjoying the coaching style that Skinner and her team are implementing.

“Everyone here has been really welcoming. I’ve been living with Amber, Jess and Shelina for the past couple of weeks and they’ve really helped me with a lot. Riko has been so great with me too, and that’s all really helped me to settle.

“I’ve enjoyed working with the coaching team too. They are direct and everything is clear in how they want us to play on the pitch. They don’t want us to overthink, just to do our jobs and the results will come.”

The Hammers head to Walton Hall Park hoping to improve on their recent record against Everton, as they search for their first win against the Toffee’s since the opening day of the 2022/23 season.

“We’re looking forward to the game this weekend against Everton,” Mengwen said. “We all see it as an opportunity for us to pick up three points and get a win.

“For myself personally, I want to show a little bit more offensively from my position. The dream would be to get an assist and help the team score.

“I think that Everton will be the type of team that will press us, but we have the quality to break through and cause them issues if we play the way that we know we can.”
