Megan Walsh is a Hammer!
Walsh left Brighton & Hove Albion when her contract expired at the end of June, bringing an end to a four-year stay on the South Coast.
Now she is in east London, ready to work under new manager Rehanne Skinner as the Hammers continue their preparations for the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League season.
Walsh has made over 100 appearances in the WSL to date, having featured for the likes of Aston Villa, Everton, Notts County and Yeovil Town, as well as the Seagulls throughout her career.
After signing on the dotted line, Walsh spoke with West Ham TV about joining the Club, her experiences out in Australia with Republic of Ireland, and her ambitions for the new season.
“I’m really excited to be continuing my journey in the Barclays Women’s Super League. It’s one of the best leagues, it’s tough and is getting more and more competitive every year.
“That’s always enjoyable, and I’m really looking forward to the season getting underway.”
Walsh is no stranger to facing up against her now current employers and will likely need very little introduction to the West Ham faithful. She’s faced off against the Hammers eight times since the Hammers joined the WSL in 2018.
“[The games against West Ham] were always interesting! Very physical, which is what you want, they were always good games and end-to-end.
“Fans might not know that I’m a quiet player off the pitch, but as soon as I step over the white line, I’m vocal and like to organise. I pride myself on my shot-stopping ability.
“Now I’m here, I want to start well in my new environment, I’m looking forward to meeting the fans and getting started.”
Walsh has just returned from Australia, where was part of Republic of Ireland’s 23-player squad that headed Down Under for their maiden World Cup.
The 28-year-old changed allegiances in 2021, having previously played for England at youth level – she qualified to represent Ireland through her Wexford-born grandfather. Walsh earned her first cap in February 2022 at the Pinatar Cup in Murcia.
“It was an amazing experience to be out in Australia and representing Ireland. The first game in Australia, having 80,000 fans in the stadium was just awesome. The girls did themselves justice out there – I think we showed that we deserve and have the talent to be on the biggest stage more often.
“It’s a fantastic experience to build on for me personally, and I’m looking forward to doing that here at West Ham.”
