Matchday Gallery | Hammers dealt harsh defeat at Anfield

West Ham United fell to a harsh defeat at Liverpool on Sunday, after Virgil van Dijk scored in the final minute to secure a final scoreline of 2-1 in his side's favour.

The Irons cancelled out Luis Díaz's first-half opener with four minutes to play, when Andrew Robertson knocked Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross into his own net, but van Dijk rose high to head home from a corner soon afterwards to make it 2-1.

With 18 minutes on the clock, Díaz arrived at the back post to knock past a helpless Alphonse Areola after Mohamed Salah burst clear down the right-hand side and fed the ball inside.

West Ham were under the cosh but came within a whisker of an instant equaliser when Mohammed Kudus' chip was touched onto the crossbar by Alisson, while James Ward-Prowse's follow-up was blocked.

Salah was a constant threat in the opening period, but the Irons fashioned another opportunity for a leveller right on half-time when Ward-Prowse delivered a corner from the right and Dinos Mavropanos headed over the top.

The Irons continued to push after the break, and after Jarrod Bowen and Kudus were denied superbly by Alisson, they looked to have got their reward when van Dijk and Robertson got in a mess trying to deal with Wan-Bissaka's dangerous low cross, bundling the ball past their goalkeeper.

However, the league leaders came roaring back to secure the points - although Niclas Füllkrug came desperately close to a second leveller with a looping header which came crashing back off the crossbar.
