Matchday Gallery: Hammers down Chelsea to open home campaign in style

West Ham United began their home Premier League campaign with a London derby against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Following a 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth to start the 2023/24 season, the Hammers were on the lookout for maximum points against the Blues.

James Ward-Prowse was in from the start following his transfer from Southampton earlier this week, while fellow new signing Edson Álvarez was also in the squad.

And it was the England midfielder who had an instant impact, delivering a seventh minute corner for Nayef Aguerd to rise highest and nod the Hammers into the lead.

Chelsea impressed in the opening period though, and levelled with 28 minutes on the clock through Carney Chukwuemeka's firm finish.

The Hammers then needed Alphonse Areola's penalty save from Enzo Fernández two minutes before the break to keep the score at 1-1 heading into half-time.

West Ham were feeling the pressure from their visitors but scored early in the second half to re-take the lead. Ward-Prowse sent Michail Antonio away in the right channel and the No9 hammered a low drive into the bottom corner.

Even though Nayef Aguerd was sent-off for receiving a second yellow card midway through the second half, the Hammers added a third in stoppage time when Emerson was felled in the box and Paquetá stepped up to score from the spot.

It sealed a 3-1 victory and a day to remember for David Moyes' men.
