West Ham United made the trip to Merseyside to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
A spot in the last four of the competition was up for grabs as David Moyes' Hammers took on Jürgen Klopp's Reds on a blustery December evening at Anfield.
The outing between the two Premier League sides saw Liverpool take the lead on 28 minutes, when Dominik Szoboszlai fired in from outside the area.
It was no less than the Reds deserved for an, in truth, dominant first half showing. The Hammers were limited to half-chances, while the host saw opportunities to double the lead go begging.
Liverpool grabbed a second eleven minutes in the second half when Darwin Núñez found Curtis Jones, and the midfielder netted from a narrow angle.
Cody Gakpo added a third on 71 minutes, but Jarrod Bowen gave the Hammers hope with a brilliantly-taken finish on his right foot on his 27th birthday on 77 minutes.
But any chance of a fightback was snuffed out when Jones added his personal second - and Liverpool's fourth - before substitute Mohamed Salah grabbed a fifth for the home side, sending them into the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
