Match Officials confirmed for Liverpool League Cup clash

Liverpool v West Ham United
Carabao Cup third round, Anfield, Wednesday 25 September 2024, 8pm BST

Referee: Andrew Madley
Assistant Referees: James Mainwaring and Paul Hodskinson
Fourth Official: Leigh Doughty

Andrew Madley has been confirmed as the referee for West Ham United’s Carabao Cup third-round trip to Premier League rivals Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Originally from Huddersfield, the 41-year-old has been a part of Professional Game Match Officials Limited’s (PGMOL) Select Group One since 2019, having made his refereeing debut in the top flight during 2017/18.

He took charge of the 2015 and 2019 EFL League One Play-Off finals, won by Preston North End and Charlton Athletic respectively, while he held the whistle during May’s FA Cup final earlier this calendar year, which saw Manchester United defeat bitter rivals Manchester City 2-1.

2023/24 saw Madley referee in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying, in international friendlies involving South Korea and Saudi Arabia, and Poland and Ukraine, as well as in three West Ham United fixtures, against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

In total, he has taken charge of eight West Ham matches during his career, while so far in 2024/25 he has refereed just one game, between Sheffield United and Derby County in the EFL Championship this past weekend.

He was also the fourth official during Sunday's dramatic Premier League draw between Manchester City and Arsenal.

James Mainwaring and Paul Hodskinson will serve as the assistant referees under the lights at Anfield.

Mainwaring is well versed at the top level, having run the line in 111 Premier League games, twice in the UEFA Europa League, once in the UEFA Europa Conference League and on 22 occasions in the EFL Cup.

Hodskinson, meanwhile, is vastly experienced in the EFL, having assisted his first Championship game in August 2014 and worked in nearly 300 fixtures in the division since. He has never run the line in the Premier League, or in a West Ham match, but he has officiated in 22 EFL Cup ties.

Leigh Doughty will undertake fourth official duties on Wednesday evening. An experienced whistler in the EFL, Doughty has worked as a fourth official in the EFL Cup four times during his career, including in West Ham’s third-round win over Lincoln City last term.

VAR will not be in use during this Carabao Cup clash.
