The Opposition

Manchester United stormed to the top of the WSL table last season, taking many by surprise, but were pipped to the title by reigning champions Chelsea in the final few weeks.

Marc Skinner’s side lost two big players in Alessia Russo and Ona Battle to Arsenal and Barcelona respectively but did bring in big name starts like Brazilian Geyse, World Cup golden boot winner Hinaya Miyazawa and Lyon’s Melvine Malard.

So far this term, United have picked up nine points from their first five league games, beating Aston Villa and Everton, and drawing with Arsenal, Leicester City and most recently, Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Red Devils were in Continental Tyres League Cup action on Thursday evening, thrashing Everton 7-0 with a much-changed lineup.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game, Skinner confirmed that Irene Guerrero and Aoife Mannion will miss out through injury.

Previous Meetings

The two teams have met seven times in league action, with Manchester United coming out on top five times, West Ham once, as well as one draw.

The win for the Hammers came in the very first league meeting between the two teams, back in December 2019 at Rush Green Stadium. German Katharina Baunach scored a late double, which included a sumptuous 90th minute free-kick that proved to be the winner.

The game was mentioned on Iron Cast, the official West Ham United podcast by Gilly Flaherty, who captained the Irons to victory in that game. Click here to listen to the full episode!
