Conor Coventry in training

Love of history, Conor McGregor and Scarface | Any Questions with Conor Coventry

Speaking to the Official Matchday Programme, Conor Coventry talks his love of gangster movies, golf, Conor McGregor and how he’d adapt to having hands for feet…

Dogs or cats?

"It has to be dogs. We used to have a sausage dog when I was younger. His name was Hamlet and I loved him loads. I was ten when we got him and I was gutted when he passed away. I’m not sure I can get another one right now, but maybe one day."

What is your first ever memory of football?

"The first thing that comes to my head was that my dad used to work in Walthamstow when I was a kid. I would play for my Sunday league team in the area. I was training with them from about four years old. So I can remember on the weekends, going to work with him and then him taking me from the jewellers across to training."

What’s your favourite film?

"Scarface. I’m a big fan of films and I could be swayed by a couple of others. But right now, I’d say Scarface. There are a lot of quotes from that movie and a lot of memorable scenes. I’d also have Goodfellas and The Godfather up there too, but I’ll go for Scarface."

Who is the best person you’ve ever known?

"That’s very deep. I’ll say my mum because she’ll probably read this! In all seriousness, she’s a legend though, so this is a shout out to Liz Coventry."

Would you rather have feet for hands and hands for feet?

"I think I’d have to go hands for feet, which will probably mean the end of my football career! But I think that would be easier to live life like that, rather than having feet for hands. Imagine how good at juggling you would be though."

Would you rather fight a kangaroo-sized duck or ten duck-sized kangaroos?

"I’ll go for the ten duck-sized kangaroos. In theory, you’d be able to just kick them away or stomp on them. It sounds easier than fighting a massive duck. That beak would cause you all sorts of problems."

What is your favourite way to spend your down time?

"I really love playing golf but I don’t get a lot of time to play during the season. I do like bingeing TV shows or watching any sort of sport. I’m a big Rory McIlroy fan so I try to watch golf too."

What were your best and worst subjects at school?

"I enjoyed history. I did an A-level in history and I think I did quite well on it. The worst was science, for sure. It was a bit much for it. I think I was smart but I couldn’t wrap my head around science.

"I did alright in my GCSES actually. I passed them all and got a couple of A*s in there!"

Who is the most skilful player you’ve played with?

"I think I’ve got to say Lucas Paquetá. Some of the stuff he does is unbelievable. The detail on some of his passes is exceptional. He’s so, so talented. He brings out a little spin or a chip in training, and all you can do is laugh."

Pick one person from history to have dinner with.

"I’ve got two in my mind. The first is Conor McGregor. I love him and it would be amazing to have dinner with him. The other is George Best, just because I’m sure he would have some brilliant stories to share."
